re: A Night of Classic Fun

Tonight four of us decided to see what it would be like to run Molten Core with just the small group. Mala (Shaman), Morgause (Mage), Siggrdriffa (Death Knight) and Wrathbourne (Mage) headed into the place and pretty much laid waste to it. There were still some challenging moments, mostly creating new strategies to compensate for just not having the people to even try what we'd grown used to all those years ago. Good times, and great loot!

High from that victory, we felt it was a good time to head "upstairs" to Blackwing Lair. At this point we were joined by Tuark (Warlock) who had also last run it ages ago. This was back in the day when BWL was the end game dungeon and only a few guilds had even downed Nefarian yet. At that time, the best that our guild (Mad Company, on the Alliance side) could do was a single downing of Vael followed by a wipe at Lashlayer. It was about this point that running the guild started to feel like herding cats and we decided to re-roll as Horde and a much smaller guild. Never having been back to BWL since, we had faded but "colorful" memories of the place.

Trying to run Razorgore with just five people is a challenge! It becomes a war of attrition trying to destroy all the eggs while a single tank pulls as much aggro as he can and the healer desperately prays that the end can be reached without running out of mana first. The first try was a wipe. On the second we thought we had it but Razorgore bugged out when the last egg was destroyed and decided to suicide rather than doing what he was supposed to. Third time was the charm, though and we moved on.

Sadly, Morgause had to leave. On top of that, we only vaguely remembered the fight. This led to an interesting "wtf?" moment when we watched our health suddenly drop like stones just as the fight really got going. We'd forgotten about how he randomly debuffs people so that our maximum health is decreased by 5% every second. Vael suddenly became a challenge of trying to figure out how to put out over 300,000 dps with only four people for him to hit with his guaranteed-death-by-debuff. We certainly missed Morgause at that point! Even so, Vael was less than 800 hp from death when the last of us went down.

The next attempt was an abortion. Wrathbourne accidentally hit a button and started the fight early, then Mala accidentally put out his fire elemental rather than the earth one. Since Vael's immune to fire, that didn't help much! It was a quick and inglorious wipe. The fact that we were all feeling tired had clearly caught up with us but we were too determined to call it a night quite yet.

We did it on the fourth try, though. By this point we understood how the debuff worked and took advantage of every trick we could to buy ourselves more time. Wrath put out his mirrored images. Tuark used his succubus for more dps. Siggrdriffa used every ghoul at her disposal. Mala used the right elemental. A couple of these managed to catch the random debuff, buying more time for us players. We ignored any real tanking rules or even healing and just went for pure dps. Vael went down and Mala was left standing to resurrect the rest of us. Sweet victory!

High from our success, we pushed on to Lashlayer even though we were so tired. Without a rogue, the traps were a total pain but at the same time it was pretty funny. None of the mobs posed a challenge, but we still had to hustle (in slow motion) as much as we could to get through before the fast respawn. Tragedy struck once again when we reached the boss. This time we had forgotten about his knockback and so we'd taken the shortest possible path through the traps. This meant that Wrathbourne managed to rediscover the knockback by being punted right back into the room below -- and all the respawned whelps which were eagerly awaiting a meal. This led to a somewhat longer than usual fight with the Broodlord, but we took him down in the end.

For most of us, this is the first time we've ever gotten that far in BWL. We're now determined and eagerly looking forward to tomorrow so that we can finish Nefarian off before Tuesday morning's reset! The spectacularly reborn Orgrimmar needs to see Nef's head on a pike once again.
